It wasn't just SHIELD that everyone had heard about. It was everyone. Everything. Tony's designs were out there. His company was hemorhaging money left and right. He had nothing left here but a vendetta and some scrap metal and now that he no longer wanted the former, he wasn't sure what to do with himself.

"I couldn't do it. I wanted to. Jesus, Banner, I wanted to do badly. But he doesn't remember anything. He doesn't even know who he is. It seemed...cruel."

So he took him home, got room service...patched him up?

Yeah, he knew it sounded crazy.
